How Long Does Concrete Take to Cure (and When Can You Use It)?

Concrete sets in hours but keeps gaining strength for weeks. Here’s the timeline.

The curing timeline

  • 24–48 hours: Walk on it (carefully). Forms often come off.
  • 7 days: About 70% strength — light vehicles OK on a driveway.
  • 28 days: Full design strength. Heavy vehicles and loads are fine.

Why the wait matters

Concrete cures through a chemical reaction, not just drying. Loading it too early causes cracks and surface damage that shorten its life. We’ll tell you exactly when your pour is ready for each use.

Weather in the Upstate

Heat, cold, and humidity all affect curing. We time pours and use proper curing methods so your concrete gains strength evenly — which is part of why professional prep and finishing matter.

Caring for new concrete

Keep heavy loads off until we say it’s ready, avoid harsh de-icing salts the first winter, and seal decorative concrete to protect the finish.
